The look of new German heavy tanks on Asian front, the Tiger particularly, stimulated Soviet designers to develop a brand new generation of armoured automobiles, on the basis of the T-100 prototype. The torsion bar suspension system was mounted higher inside hull, bringing down the tanks height from the ground and enabling installing a more substantial turret in a position to hold a 100mm cannon (within the JS-1) or a 122mm cannon (in the JS-2, which showed up by the end of 1943).
