The 2-stroke, 3-cylinder Honda NS500 replaced the NR500 for the 1982 period. After a disappointing debut period, the NS500 shined in 1983 taking right out the championship because of the young 21-year-old Freddie Spencer on helm. Spencer's season long name battle with threetime globe champ Kenny Roberts produced the most exciting seasons within the reputation for GP racing. Going into the last round, Spencer lead Roberts by just 5 points. In a difficult final battle, despite Roberts taking the checkered flag, Spencer's second placing offered him enough points to secure the championship by 2 points, making him the youngest ever 500cc GP champion. The Honda-Spencer combination had the perfect stability of youth, natural ability and best engineering technology.
