The Kawanishi N1K1-J Shiden was a remarkable adaptation of the original N1K1 "Kyofu" floatplane into a land-based fighter, developed by the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. This transformation was spearheaded by Kawanishi Aircraft as a private venture, leading to its official designation as the N1K1-J. First taking flight in December 1942, this aircraft was notable for its combination of advanced engineering and combat effectiveness.
Equipped with the Nakajima Homare engine, the N1K1-J achieved excellent performance and maneuverability. However, it faced challenges due to its large propeller, necessitating innovative solutions like telescopic landing gear to manage its midwing configuration. Despite these complexities, around 1,000 units were built, serving actively in regions such as the Philippines, Formosa, and Okinawa.
