About the Douglas F4D-1 Skyray Towards the conclusion of World War II, numerous information regarding higher level aeronautical technology had been captured in Germany by the U.S. Forces. One of them ended up being an analysis for the studies carried out by Dr. Alexander Lippisch on deltawinged aircraft. In relation to the information, the Douglas company developed the F4D Skyray, the actual only real operational interceptor with delta wings inside U.S. Navy.

Starting the look in 1947, Douglas ended up being awarded a contract for the construction and evaluating of two prototypes in December 1948. 1st prototype took off on its maiden journey in January 1951. The second prototype flew briefly thereafter, as well as the airframe set two new world records, absolute speed record of 1,211km/h and 100km shut course record of 1,171km/h, in October 1953. Having many improvements and refinements, the initial production F4D-1 made its maiden flight in June 1954 and joined squadron solution in April 1956. The distinctive 50 degree sweptback wings with round tips had been built with leading edge slats and trailing side elevons. A couple of trimmers had been set up regarding the inboard trailing sides associated with the wings. The external portions of this wings might be folded upwards by oil stress for carrier stowage.

Even though Skyray never saw any combat, it proved its high ability as an interceptor with many world documents and scramble actions in Taiwan responding to crises in late 1950's.
