Provided for Singapore to aid deter Japanese advances in the area, the battleship Prince of Wales and battle cruiser Repulse were symbols of Uk naval power. On December 8th, 1941,these two money ships, escorted by two E course destroyers (HMS Electra, HMS Express), one S Course destroyer (HMS Tenedos), as well as the Australian navy destroyer HMAS Vampire, sent from Singapore to attack a Japanese intrusion force. This objective was aborted and group,minus the detached HMS Tenedos, turned back towards Singapore. But they had already been spotted by Japanese aircraft and submarines, plus in the ensuing bomb and torpedo attackby bombers, both capital ships had been sunk.
