The real USS The Sullivans (DD-537) was launched in April 1943 and commissioned in September 1943. Renamed in February 1943 to honor five brothers lost aboard the cruiser Juneau, she served in the Pacific theatre performing plane guard, shore bombardment, and radar picket duties, including Okinawa operations. Decommissioned after World War II, she returned to service for the Korean War and was finally decommissioned in 1965. The ship earned nine World War II battle stars and two Korean War stars. Her measured dimensions were approximately 114.8 m length overall, 12.1 m beam, 4.1 m draft, and a displacement near 2,050 tons.
