The Trumpeter 05742 is a 1:700 scale plastic model kit reproducing the heavy cruiser USS New Orleans CA-32 in its 1942 configuration, provided in selectable waterline or full-hull format and positioned within Trumpeter's 1:700 warship range.
The New Orleans class represented the last group of interwar "Treaty" heavy cruisers completed between World War I and World War II. Seven ships shared similar external profiles and displaced roughly 10,136 tons standard and about 12,436 tons at full load during wartime, figures that rose as radar, electronics, and anti-aircraft armament were added. The class saw widespread service in the Pacific campaign, participating in numerous engagements; only four units remained active after 1942, and the class collectively earned extensive battle recognition.
Model construction is focused on external detail and display flexibility. The kit supplies a multi-piece upper and lower hull with a separate waterline plate so builders can choose waterline or full-hull presentation. Masts, superstructure elements, and small fittings are provided as injection-molded plastic parts across multiple sprues. Decal markings reproduce the MS21 camouflage used in 1942. Instructions and sprue layout are arranged to support accurate assembly and painting for display or diorama use.
Aimed at display-oriented modelers and collectors, the model provides external fidelity, a clear waterline/full-hull choice, and a parts count consistent with detailed 1:700 naval subjects.
