Soft shock spring for R12/GT

The Yokomo R12-37SS is a soft-rate replacement spring designed for use with X-style shocks on R12 and GT series 1/10-scale RC chassis. It is intended as a tuning part to alter rebound and initial compression behaviour, allowing finer control over chassis balance without changing shock pistons or oil weight.

Installation is straightforward for hobbyists familiar with basic shock service: remove the shock cap and spring retainer, slide out the existing spring, fit the R12-37SS ensuring correct orientation on the shock shaft, then reassemble and recheck preload. Use standard shock tools and a firm workbench to avoid losing small parts during service.

On the track the soft spring is typically used to:

  • Increase mechanical grip on low-traction surfaces by allowing more initial compliance.
  • Smooth out small bumps and curbs for better mid-corner stability.
  • Complement softer shock oil or reduced spring preload to fine-tune roll and turn-in.

Choose this spring when progressive feel and smoother weight transfer are desired, and when other suspension adjustments such as anti-roll bars or ride height have already been set.

A soft spring compresses more under load, improving initial grip and absorbing small bumps, but may increase body roll.
Not always, but pairing softer springs with slightly thicker oil can control rebound if the car feels too lively.
Yes, check ride height and spring preload after installation to maintain intended geometry and handling balance.
